(SGGS, Ang 183)

Satguru Nanak Dev appeared on Earth according to the traditional Sikh sources in the month of Katak (october/november) 1469 during Pooranmashi, the full moon (1526 Bikrami Katak Pooranmashi). The Satguru is the manifested Sargun Roop, the visible manifestation of Akaal Purakh Waheguru, God, to dispell the darkness on earth, to uplift humanity, to free the individual soul to unite with the wondrous Enlightener, and Illuminator, Waheguru - God almighty.

Satguru Nanak Dev's place of appearance is Rai-Bhoi di Talwandi, today known as Sri Nankana Sahib in Pakistan. The parents of the Jagat Guru were Mata Tripta and Baba Kalu (Kalyan Chand) of the Bedi lineage. Baba Nanak had one sister Bebe Nanaki. The Satguru married Mata Sulakhani, both had two sons Baba Sri Chand 'Udasi' and Baba Lakhmi Das. Satguru Nanak Dev Ji's appearance, His timeless teachings have changed the destiny of millions of humans and will inspire more to follow that beautiful path. Satguru Nanak Dev lived for several years in Sultanpur Lodhi. Bhai Gurdas in his Varan calls Sultanpur the 'Treasure of God's adoration'. There Guru Nanak Dev went to the Bein river (Kali Bein) to take a bath, where He got immersed and disappeared for three days. In Sach Khand, the eternal realm of the highest Truth, in the abode of God, Satguru Nanak Dev received WAHEGURU NAAM, the Gur Mantar, the One Name of the Lord, the One Mantar of the Lord. Coming out, Satguru Nanak Dev gave His first sermon and started with His mission on Earth. Gurudwara Ber Sahib was built there in loving commemoration of Satguru Nanak Dev. The first Sikh Guru started with the tradition of Shabad Kirtan, the singing of the Holy Hymns to praise God almighty. Bhai Mardana and Bhai Bala Ji accompanied the Satguru on many occasions. To spread the loving universal message of Sikhi, Waheguru Naam, the One Name of the Lord and Gurbani, the direct word of the formless Lord, Satguru Nanak Dev travelled thousands of kilometers. He undertook four journeys (Udasis) for the welfare of all, to reveal the way of Truth, towards different directions. Satguru Nanak Dev travelled extensively throughout India, Sri Lanka, Mecca, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and many more. Wherever the Satguru placed His Lotus feet, there was a place of worship, a Gurudwara built. Satguru Nanak Dev left for heavenly abode in Kartarpur Sahib (1596 Bikrami Asoo - Sri Kartarpur Sahib, october 1539 AD).

ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਬੁਝਾਇ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥
The One Name is the Lord´s Command. O Nanak, the True Guru has given me this understanding.

(SGGS, Siri Raag M. 1, Ang 72)

Satguru Nanak Dev started to recite the Mool Mantar, which He also received in Sach Khand. The Mool Mantar is the seed Mantar in Sikhism. The Holy Guru Granth Sahib opens with the Mool Mantar which is part of the first Bani 'Sri Japji Sahib'. The Japji Sahib consists of the Mool Mantar, an opening Verse or Salok, a collection of 38 Pauris and a concluding Salok. This Bani (prayer) is the first sacred composition in the Holy Guru Granth Sahib. It is a very famous and precise summary describing the greatness, beauty and omnipotence of Akaal Purakh Waheguru, God and the Philosophy of divine Truth taught by Satguru Nanak Dev. Sri Japji Sahib is read to obtain 'Brahm Gian', the knowledge and wisdom about God and the mechanism of creation. The word 'Jap' means recite/chant (His Name). 'Ji' is used to express respect, just as the word 'Sahib' expresses reverence. The literal translation of Sahib means 'Master'. In the traditional Gurmat teaching there are five main mantar. The Sri Japji Sahib is considered as the 'Mala Mantar'. The first instruction in Sri Japji Sahib is 'Jap' - to recite, to repeat, to meditate on Waheguru Naam to remember the existence and reality of the One creator Lord. Sri Japji Sahib teaches how to meditate on the omnipotent divine Truthfulness, how to praise and to connect directly with the almighty universal All Soul of the Creator, Paramatma, through Naam.

ik Oankar

Satguru Nanak Dev's Sikh faith teaches, there is only One creator Lord 'IK OANKAR', who creates, sustains and dissolves everything in His creation, who is the father and mother of all mankind. God, Guru and Guru Shabad are not separate entities. In the Nirgun roop - God is invisible, unmanifest, formless, without attributes, omnipotent power. The invisible form of Guru (God) cannot be seen, but can be experienced through Naam. The Nirgun form transcends creation, but infuses all of creation. In the Sargun roop - God is all pervading, visible throughout his whole manifested creation. His light (Jot), love and breath is contained in the smallest atome to the biggest creation. This is the everlasting unchanging Truth which is expressed in the Shabad Guru. In each and every heart, in each and every created form God's light, energy and love pervades. Every cell of ours is filled with Him - 'Angsang Waheguru'. To see God's light in all, means to overcome the duality and the illusion of the mind to be a separated entity from the source of existence. Therefore the Ten Satgurus set a deep, profound and very practical system into life for the individual to transform one's own Self to unite with Akaal Purakh Waheguru, God.

Akaal Purakh Waheguru manifested and expressed Himself in the form of the Satguru. Satguru Nanak Dev and all the nine following Sikh Gurus were one in spirit and light, One Jot in Ten forms. Each Sikh Guru had a certain mission on earth to fulfill. The Sikh Gurus have gifted their Sikhs and to whole mankind the direct word of the formless Lord which is known as GURBANI, revealed in the Eternal-living Guru, the Holy Guru Granth Sahib. The Eternal Shabad Guru is the highest spiritual, religious authority and guide in the Sikh faith. Every Ang of the Holy Guru Granth Sahib is filled with the unspoken melody of the ever-lasting, unchanging Truth, with the unconditional Love and bond between the Seeker, Guru and God Almighty. Satguru Nanak Dev and the Sikh Gurus have established The Sikh way of Life to bless their Sikhs and everyone who is partaking. The Sikh faith states about the importance of practicing a truthful and righteous life, becoming a true human being with the birth right of freedom and self-realisation, the union with God. We are born, because of Karma (the law of cause and effect), we enter this world, and we are set in play. We are destined to re-unite with our true Home, with Akaal Purakh Waheguru. God is the creator, the doer, the sole foundation of the universe, omnipotent, omnipresent, without fear, without hatred, undying, unattached, unconditional Love, the everlasting truth and reality, eternal peace and bliss, beyond any description. The main theme in Satguru Nanak Dev Ji's teaching is about how to connect and merge with the eternal neverchanging absolute blissful Truth, with the wondrous Lord Waheguru, through Waheguru Naam, Gurbani and the Saadh Sangat. It is about how to overcome the binding influence of Maya, the temporary, illusionary world and how to transform the five strong thieves, the Panj Chor - Kaam, Krodh, Lobh, Moh, Ahankar. Satguru Nanak Dev's faith is about Love and sacrifice, it is about truth and righteousness, it is about compassion, valour and freedom.

What do we have to sacrifice in Sikhi?

We offer the five evils, the Panj Chor - Lust, Anger, Greed, emotional/material attachment and Ego to His Lotus feet. We offer our sins and mistakes which are engraved on our souls which we have accumulated in many lifetimes. We offer our difficulties and sorrows to His Lotus feet. We offer our Love, surrender and devotion to Him. To become the dust of the feet of the Holy, to become the dust of the feet of All, one becomes humble, grateful, supporting and serving. To shut down the love of duality and the attachment to Maya, is the biggest challenge for the individual.

The Holy Guru Granth Sahib teaches, to accept and follow God's will, His Hukam, that makes the aspirant aware of the sole maker and the true owner of everything, of the One God, Ik Oankar. The Ten Sikh Gurus, immanent Gursikhs and Shaheeds have sacrificed for this unique Sikh faith to safe all future generations to come. When unrighteousness, falsehood and injustice are overweighing, when Truth and Righteousness are suppressed, then God creates a catalysator, that the evolutionary, positive energies can rise up and win over the destructive energies. Guru Arjan Dev and Guru Tegh Bahadur gave Shaheedi, Guru Harkrishan Ji healed thousands of ill people in Delhi, to free them from their pains, sufferings and hopelessness, He gave up his own life for these souls. Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, sacrificed His four sons, the Chaar Sahibzade for the sake of Truth, righteousness and freedom. Mata Gujri Kaur Ji gave Shaheedi. Baba Deep Singh gave His head to protect and uphold the Sikh faith. Bhai Mani Singh and all wonderful souls of the Shaheeds, Sikh men and Sikh women, who belonged to the House of the Guru are remembered in the daily Ardas, Sikh Prayer. Sikhi is about Love and sacrifice, and about destroying the inner enemies, the Panj Chor, which are leading the human consciousness into the cycle of birth and death. The Panj Chor are responsible for performing misdeeds and sins. Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj came into this world to protect truth and righteousness.

To accept and follow the Guru's Teachings, Gurmat and the Will of God makes the Sikh brave, courageous, detached and fearless. The only fear which should remain, is the fear of God to keep the individual away of performing destructive (evil) deeds. Every action, every deed one is performing is recorded on the soul and will act in form of Karma, the law of cause and effect. Therefore the Sikh Gurus have set up a system to protect the soul on her journey in this particular age. The Sikh faith lays down the foundation of the theme of having Chardikala, to live in a high spirit of trust and protection by Guru/God. Living in a state where praise and slander are the same, where gold and dust is equal. Knowing, that every dark cloud in one's personal life is a temporary episode, which pays off the karmic deeds, balancing the account to purify the soul on her way to the almighty creator Lord. To have the assurance after these passing clouds, the Light of God shines forth and this is the permanent basis. Chardikala is the blessing of having Gurus/Gods unconditional love, support and shelter. Walking on that path, the Gursikhs are being tested, corrected, formed, prepared and always lovingly embraced by the True Guru. The state of Chardikala transcends the concept of being the body, it reveals the eternal Truth to 'Whom' everything belongs. Waheguru, God, leads and protects the aspirant to follow this illuminious and unique path of Sikhi.

Siri Guru Granth Sahib

In 1604 Guru Arjan Dev installed the Adi Guru Granth Sahib in the Sri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple), the highest seat of spiritual Sikh authority, where Baba Buddha Ji became the first Head Granthi. The Sri Akaal Takht opposite of Sri Harmandir Sahib symbolizes the highest seat of temporal power.
All beautiful Raags in the Holy Guru Granth Sahib - The Eternal living Guru (31 main Raags, 31 Mishrat Raags in 17 Taala), describe different themes of separation, longing, sadness, happiness, beauty, contentment, motivation, bliss, and union. The foundation in the Sikh faith is 'Gurmat', the Teachings and Wisdom of Guru. The Sikh Gurus taught that meditation and recitation on the formless Lord with the Gur Mantar Waheguru will destroy the attachment to Maya and the influences of the five thieves, which the Ego is one of them. God has created Maya, the temporary, illusionary world of existence, from it emerged the three qualities Tamas, Rajas and Sattwa. They act as material nature through the whole mechanism of creation. Due to the play of Maya, her binding, overshadowing, enticing but deceiving nature, she leads the humans astray from the path to God, from the path of unity with God. Her five strong ambassadors, the Panj Chor, are operating in every human being. No one can escape them, all are bound and governed by them. The individual, who is following the Gurmat teachings of Satguru Nanak Dev and the Sikh Gurus, will experience an evolutionary change and transformation within. The curtain of illusion of the mind to be separated from the source of creation will be shattered through the transforming Power of Waheguru Naam, the Word of the Shabad, Gurbani, practicing the daily Nitnem (Sikh prayers), performing Shabad Kirtan, attending the Saadh Sangat and doing Seva (selfless service). The Word of the Shabad Guru is the most kindly and effective weapon to bring down the five thieves and the attachment to Maya with the arrow of Prem and Shant Ras, the essence of Love and Peace, in this dark age of Kali Yuga. The Sikh belief system taught by the Sikh Gurus is melting away our sins, mistakes and residues, which we as humans have accumulated in countless life times. It purifies the mind and prepares the soul (soulbride) step by step for the day of union with Her true Husband Lord.

When Guru Hargobind Sahib, the sixth Nanak, manifested the concept of Miri and Piri (temporal and spiritual power), a new chapter in Sikh history became immanent for the future of the Sikh religion. Patshahee Dasveen, Guru Gobind Singh, entered this world with the purpose to uphold and to protect Righteousness and Truth on Earth. He created the Khalsa Panth in the Will of Akaal Purakh Waheguru, God in Sri Anandpur Sahib in 1699. After undertaking the Sikh baptism ceremony 'Amrit Sanchar' with the Panj Pyare, the five beloved ones, the spirit of Prem Ras (essence of love) and Bir Ras (the warrior spirit) is infused in the baptised Sikh, the Khalsa. The warrior spirit is born and contained in the work of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Sahib Ji Maharaj, in the 'Sri Dasam Granth'. The concept of the Sant-Sipahi (Saint-Soldier) in Sikhism is based on a holistic foundation, to defend, to protect, to uphold the principles and teachings of the Sikh Gurus, as well as human and democratic values and rights in society.

Satguru Nanak Dev and the Sikh Gurus taught to do Seva (selfless service), to attend the Saadh Sangat, the Holy congreation, to share with others (Wand Chakko), to protect and help the weak, the poor and downtrodden, all those who need a helping hand. To work engaged and honestly for one's own income (Kirat Karo), to recite and to meditate on Waheguru Naam (Naam Japo/Naam Simran), to stand up for Truth, Justice and Righteousness. The Sikh Gurus rejected the caste system, discrimination and supported equal rights of women. To accept and follow the Gurus Teaching, Gurmat and God's Hukam implants to start living a Life in harmony with the Laws of Nature, in the Will of God. Delusion, self-conceit, doubt, attachment and fear depart when one connects with Holy Guru Granth Sahib with Gurbani and Naam. The ten Satgurus have revealed to mankind an unique method of uniting with God. They have set up a new, revolutionary, distinctive path of Life and Faith, which is known as Sikhi, Sikhism, Sikh Religion and Sikh belief. Satguru Nanak Dev's faith teaches humility, how to become a better human being, how to transcend the love of duality, how to cultivate the fickle mind to dive into, to experience and reflect the Atma to connect and merge with Paramatma, the All-Soul of the transcendent Lord, to finally end the cycle of birth and death, the repeating process of reincarnation.

Lotus Flower

The Love for God is implanted through the Guru. The Guru connects and reveals the beauty, greatness and love of God to the individual soul. Meeting the Guru, through the Shabad, through His Word, we meet God, the wondrous undescribable Truth. The direct word of the formless God states, that the Shabad Guru is the boat to carry across the individual soul over the treacherous world-ocean of existence (Maya). The One Mantar 'Gur Mantar Waheguru', the power of Naam, the Name of the Lord, destroys millions of sins, it eradicates the Ego, as Bhai Gurdas writes in his Varan. Holy Guru Granth Sahib declares, in Naam, the Name of the Lord, everything is contained, all treasures, all virtues, all forms of meditation, all acts of charity, the whole potency of God. Naam frees the soul from bondage and illusion of attachment. Without His Name, there is no shelter at all. To keep God all the time in one's own consciousness, to meditate on His identity, to sing the glorious praises of the Lord, the Kirtan, is the most exalted and sublime deed in this dark age of Kali Yuga. Where the human consciousness lives in unawareness and ignorance, where the worldy life of each and everyone experiences times of ups and downs in changing cycles, there Naam, the Name of the Lord, and Bani are the healing ointment, the soothing medicine to stabilise the mind, body and soul. To plant the seed of God's Name, is to plant the seed of becoming awakened, to experience contentment, love, inner stillness, bliss and freedom in one's own being.

Waterfall

The blessings of Akaal Purakh Waheguru, of Satguru Nanak Dev in the midst of this dark age of Kali Yuga, the rays of the Sun and the Holy water of Amrit Naam, Amrit Bani are pouring down to bless the soul of mankind, to support and sustain mother earth.

The Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, is forever the Giver of happiness (peace). Through the Guru's Teachings, Gurmat, it dwells in the mind. ||1||

Those who have accepted the Guru’s Teachings (Gurmat) and who have found the path, remain absorbed in the Praises of the True Lord. What teachings can be imparted to those who have the Divine GURU NANAK as their Guru? || 1 || FIRST MEHL: We understand the Lord only when He Himself inspires us to understand Him. He alone knows everything, unto whom the Lord Himself gives knowledge. One may talk and preach and give sermons but still yearn after Maya. The Lord, by the Hukam of His Command, has created the entire creation. He Himself knows the inner nature of all. O NANAK, He Himself uttered the Word. Doubt departs from one who receives this gift. || 2 ||

Comfort, peace and tranquility, wealth and the nine treasures; wisdom, knowledge, and all spiritual powers; learning, penance, Yoga and meditation on God. The most sublime wisdom and purifying baths; the four cardinal blessings, the opening of the heart-lotus; in the midst of all, and yet detached from all; beauty, intelligence, and the realisation of reality; to look impartially upon all, and to see only the One — these blessings come to one who, through GURU NANAK, chants the Naam, the Name of the Lord with his mouth, and hears the Word with his ears. || 6 ||

(SGGS, Ang 295/296)

O Nanak, serve the GURU, the Lord Incarnate; the Blessed Vision of His Darshan is profitable, and in the end, you shall not be called to account. || 2 ||

GURU NANAK implanted the Naam, the Name of the Lord, within me; He is All-powerful, to create and destroy. Remember God forever, my friend, and all your suffering will disappear. || 1 ||

(SGGS, Ang 317)

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭੋ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਾ ॥ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਚੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੂਰਾਖਾ ॥

The Power of the Dharma has been firmly established by the Lord. That which my mind wishes for, the True Guru has granted. I have become carefree, and I fix my attention on the One Lord. || 3 || As the child places so much faith in His father, I speak as it pleases the Guru to have me speak. As GURU NANAK is pleased, O my dear beloved, we are united with the Lord. || 1 || I have not tasted divine Love, O my dear beloved, within my heart. The mind’s desires are not quenched, O my dear beloved, but I still hold out hope. Youth is passing away, O my dear beloved, and death is stealing away the breath of life. The virtuous bride realises the good fortune of her destiny, O my dear beloved; O Nanak, she enshrines the Lord within her heart. || 2 ||

From the wealth of the Lord, I have obtained the nine treasures; the true essence of the Lord has come into my hands. || 3 || No matter how much I eat and expend this wealth, it is not exhausted; here and hereafter, it remains with me. NANAK is the supreme Saint, Lord’s own manifestation. Anyone who lives near Him is liberated, and keeping faith on Him purifies the mind. 28.

(Bhai Bala Ji saying): What the unknowing people did not know, that GURU Ji was the manifestation of the Lord Himself; that the source of Happiness has taken the human form to uproot the growth of ignorance, and to inspire people to chant God's Name. They were also unaware that all the nine treasures, and eighteen occult powers stand in their court with folded hands, waiting for the next order. How can there be a shortage of anything when Lord Himself is pervading in Maya. 3.

Sri Guru Nanak Parkash describes in the Adhyais the state of mother earth when approaching the Almighty Lord for help (english version):

Couplet – The earth had become over burdened with the sin of the individuals and the spirit of righteousness had vanquished. The loving devotion of God had disappeared from the world and the people began to live in fear. 15.
Quatrain – In the end the earth remembered the Name of God, she requested shelter and support from the Lord. She said:
O Lord you are the greatest of all and have no beginning. O God you are the supreme, highest of all and leader of the demi gods who forever remains the same. 16.
O God you are the protector and helper of the meek and poor. O Lord you are the master of the meek who cares for them whilst invisible to the human eye. You are exempt from old age, immortal, who cannot be eulogised... You are exempt from fear, away from the effects of Maya, unaccountable and unknowable. 17.
During the age of Kaljug the amount of sin has increased and due to this I am overburdened by its weight. The present time is very painful and hurtful. Without your assistance O Lord I am unable to survive. 18.
Couplet – In the age of Satjug righteousness had four feet (Sat, Soch, Tap and Daan) whilst in Treta there was only three. In the age of Dwapur two feet remained whilst the age of Kaljug was left with one. 19.
Quatrain – The dark age of sin known as Kaljug has started and for this reason I am over burdened by this weight. With righteousness standing on its last foot (Daan) the world cannot be sustained and without your assistance the world can not survive. 20.
O the great Lord please listen to my supplication, please assist me in such a way that I will be able to settle. After listening to the supplication of the earth who was in considerable distress then the Lord responded. 21.
For this specific reason I have sent many souls to the earth who have started their various faiths... started their various orders. 22.
They did not tell the earth about the "Glory of My Name" and did not teach people about loving devotion to me. Through the Name of God the earth can gain support and shelter. These are the words said by the Lord. 23.
When the Name of God and its Kirtan is done in the world then you will be sheltered. For this reason I personally will adopt a Sargun form and manifest on the earth as no one else will be able to perform this task. 24.
In this way God's words gave a refuge to the lamenting earth. By adopting this faith all the burden of the earth will be decimated. In this way the words of the Lord resonated from the sky causing great happiness in the heart and in the mind of the earth. 25.
... for this reason Sri Guru Nanak Dev manifested into the clan of the Bedi’s who like a night Lotus bloomed with the arrival of Sri Guru Nanak Dev who was like the soothing moon. The formless Lord adopted a Sargun form and manifested on the earth and was known in the form of the Satguru. 26.
Couplet – The bad deeds are like the night and the age of Kaljug is wrought with fear. The falsehood spread in the world was like the array of stars in the night sky. In the way that many nocturnal flowers bloom in the night so had many faiths and beliefs bloomed. At that time the majority rule was by the Islamic faith. 27.
Quatrain – In order to dispel the darkness Guru Nanak Dev manifested as if he was the rising sun. In this way Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji illuminated the world. The Guru was like the sun whilst his discourses were like the rays of the sun. The Saints on seeing the sun like Guru had their Lotus like Hearts in full bloom. 28.
Those living in falsehood and atheists all felt the pain of the sun like Guru as the owls do when the sun rises. Those who believed in the Guru were in bliss as the Chaki is when it sees the sun rise. The radiance of meditation was illuminated throughout the world. The ignorance within the devotees was dispelled by the Guru. 29.
Those great beings were awoken once they gained wisdom and knowledge. In the way a person leaves a dream and awakens the devotees left their sinful past gaining knowledge and devotion. In order to sustain the wisdom of the great beings Sri Guru Nanak Dev manifested into the clan of the Bedi's. 30.

In the pitch moral darkness all round. There burns a blazing Light. The whole dark age is spiritually illumined. With the religion of Naam-Dharma: Spiritual discipline of contemplating God’s Name. It is now known and revealed, in the whole world and universe: Guru Nanak is the Embodiment of the Eternal spirit of God.

Guru Arjan Dev

The Guru, the Lord of the Universe, became merciful to me, and I obtained all of my mind’s desires. I have become stable and steady, touching the Lord’s Feet, and singing the glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe. || 1 || This is the time, a perfectly auspicious time. I am in celestial peace, tranquility and ecstasy, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the unstruck melody of the sound current vibrates and resounds through all levels. || 1 || Pause || Meeting with my Beloved Lord and Master, my Home has become a mansion filled with happiness. Servant Nanak has attained the treasure of the Lord’s Name, all his desires have been fulfilled. || 2 || 8 || 36 || SORAT’H, FIFTH MEHL: The Guru’s feet abide within my pure Heart. God has blessed me with his grace. The Perfect Transcendent Lord became merciful to me, and I found the treasure of the Naam within my mind. || 1 || My beloved Guru is my saving Grace, my only best friend. Over and over again, He blesses me with double, even four-fold, greatness. || 1 || Pause || God saves all beings and creatures, giving them the Blessed Vision of His Darshan. Wondrous is the glorious Greatness of the Perfect Guru. NANAK is forever a sacrifice to God almighty.
